A trip to The Past

Seeds of hard work.

It all started many years and a few generations ago.

In a small village on the island of Chios in Greece, a hard working farmer named Harry Paxos, decided to come to America after the passing of his young wife, Maria.
On December 12th, 1966, he arrived to New Jersey with his children, Chris, Irene and Staci. Working day and night for about 5-6 years, the family saved enough money to start their own business. In the early 70's they bought the M&A diner in the Downtown Jersey City.

In the summer of 1973, Irene went back Chios Greece for vacation. There, she met Peter, who became her husband just days later. Peter followed Irene to America and worked alongside her at M&A diner. Soon after, their life was enriched with 3 children . Later Harry and his son, Chris, opened a new diner elsewhere and sold the the tiny subway car M&A diner to Irene and Peter who renamed it the “Newport Pancake House” and a star was born.

The secret is simple… the culmination of the family's thrilling love for their food and the endearing atmosphere hard to duplicate! Every meal is prepared by the watchful eye of Peter, the genuine laughter and enthusiasm of the Irene feels the air with joyfulness, the smarts of little Bobby, the ever-smiling little Maria and the playful “baby,” Zoe creates an amorously addictive environment for the patrons!

The Beginning of the Brownstone

Formerly the M&A Diner, then the Newport Pancake House and later the Brownstone, has been run by the Bournias' family since 1868. The building is on the corner of Jersey Avenue and Grand Street, with its own parking lot in the back.
This incredible and authentic mom and pop diner, founded by Pete and Irene Bournias, was one of those must visit places that make people travel for miles to eat their way through the delicious menu. Today there are 6 of those incadable diners owned and run for three generations by the same family.
